Episode Highlights

  • 01:50 – Collin congratulates Mark for his big success in winning the ‘Emmy Best Picture Award’ for 2022.
  • 03:35 – Mark says that he loved playing football, so he put in extra hours just for the love of the game. So, he was fortunate to go to the NFL and he would have done it for free.

  • 09:00 – Mark says he was very fortunate to have Don James, who is the coach of Washington University, and he had learned a lot from him.
  • 11:20 – Mindset is a conditioned set of beliefs that drives behavior. So, what you believe to be true about yourself, about your situation, or about your environment, influences your behaviors.
  • 13:00 – Collin mentions that through his programs, he gives daily drills. Just like getting get your muscles stronger by doing different lifts, similarly, there are mental and emotional lifts through reflecting, workshops, sharing, getting vulnerable, and creating some systems on self-talk—which you focus in on the moment, how to notice and work through anxiety, fear, stress, self-doubt, and failure.
  • 15:00 – Learning to become vulnerable is hard because as a sports guy, many times you’re viewed as tougher. Mark says that he got stronger by being more open and more vulnerable to different things that were coming in life, versus always trying to be the tough guy.
  • 16:50 – It’s finding that balance of empathy, but also, we have to have results. If you don’t get the desired outcomes, that should be okay, as the result alone doesn’t define you.
  • 19:20 – Mark asks Collin about when somebody seems to have it all, how do you train somebody on getting the right mindset?
  • 22:15 – Collin mentions that he avoids looking at Instagram early in the day, and he first writes a little bit of prayer depending on what’s going on. After that, he teaches mindfulness.
  • 24:15 – Collin talks about the HAW method of mindfulness, where he talks about everything positive in order to get into the right mindset to start the day.
  • 26:20 – We don’t realize the influence that words and language have on us. Research from the National Science Foundation shows that 80% of human thoughts are negative.
  • 28:30 – Even if it’s just mindfulness where your goal is to just not judge thoughts, but just quiet your mind and focus on either a breath or a mantra or a sound, that is great training too.
  • 30:30 – Collin recommends getting on the whiteboard and drawing a mindset game plan.

Three Key Points

  1. Collage image with mountainous background displaying Finding Your Summit logo, episode number and photos of both Mark Pattison and Collin HendersonYou can train your body like an athlete—lifting weights, and getting stronger—but you have no systems around the mind, how to be self-aware, how to stay in the present moment—things like self-talk, how to visualize, how to look at your core values and not to worry about the outcome. During Collin’s association with a company, he hit a rough patch where it wasn’t healthy—also he wasn’t sleeping well. Then, he got exposed to a Sales Coach who spoke about the power of the mind. After that, Collin started blogging, started writing books, and started speaking—and this started in 2016.
  2. We need to understand that we all have been conditioned since we were babies from what we see, hear and experience, and that’s creating a belief system. Unfortunately, our beliefs aren’t based on the truth, but on our perception of truth, which flows into our behaviors. So the work Collin does is that he tries to uncover some old stories that aren’t true about how you see yourself, about what you value, about your worth, about that thing you choose to focus on.
  3. COVID research showed that two out of three high school kids were depressed and anxious. Research on ncaa.org shows that 85% of trainers say that their athletes and their college athletes are anxious. So, it’s like if you’re leading people, we need to do something—we can’t just expect to compete and play without training. So, a lot more coaches are open to the thought of becoming mental mindset coaches.
